In 2017, when the first Trump administration was just beginning, a group of nurse activists composed a “Declaration of Solidarity and Resistance.” By early 2018, 2,215 nurses had signed on to the Declaration. Now it is 2025, and many nurses are even more deeply concerned, even horrified, that not only are we re-experiencing the health-damaging traumas of 2017, but we are witnessing even more dreadful and devastating effects of government action. There are many signs of nurses concern, and actions – notably the actions being taken by National Nurses United, but we believe the response needs to strengthen and grow larger and louder.
The NurseManifest team is renewing our Declaration of Solidarity and Resistance, and once again we are calling for nurses to join together to take action. We call upon nurses to stand together, act to resist that which harms individual and societal health and well-being, protect those who are harmed, and build coalitions that move toward the ideals we seek. We stand on a long legacy of nursing political activism that arises from our moral imperative to actively promote public policy that assures social/health equity. Our actions are grounded in nursing’s core values and in the premise that health and well-being depends on healthy environments and just communities. We pledge to join with others to engage in determined action to protect health and justice for all, regardless of age, social/economic circumstance, religion, skin color, race, country of origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. We invite you to add your signature to the 2025 Declaration to indicate your dedication to the fundamental values at the core of nursing.
1. We stand firm on the principle that health and well-being of mind, body and spirit is a fundamental human right.
As nurses, we are committed to provide care for all people – care that promotes and supports high level wellness, prevention and treatment of injury and disease, and restoration of health when it is compromised. As a part of the global nursing community, nurses in the U.S. are committed to the care of individuals, families, groups, and populations in all regions of the globe.
2. We maintain that the health and wellbeing of humankind is dependent upon the health of the environment.
We oppose all actions that contribute to damage of earth’s ecosystem. We will promote, protect, and support actions toward healthy and sustainable structural and natural environments for all the earth’s living inhabitants.
3. We assert that all people are deserving of access to affordable quality care.
As nurses, we are committed to caring for all persons resident within our nation, regardless of economic status, sexual orientation/gender Identities, current immigration status, country of origin, age, ability to pay, or spiritual/religious beliefs/practices (or lack thereof).
4. We oppose all forms of oppression and discrimination.
We work to protect and care for those whose safety and well-being is threatened based on gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual identity, physical ability, economic status, religion or any other attribute seen as “difference.” We will publicly oppose any attempt to weaken policy or programs designed to protect health and well-being of those who are disadvantaged. We will fight for policies and programs that assure fair, equal and just treatment.
5. We oppose intimidation and violence in our homes and communities.
We will act to protect any who are victims of intimidation and violence, particularly those who are vulnerable because of skin color, race, sexual orientation, country of origin, gender identity or religion. As nurses, we nurture peaceful resolution of conflict and support those who step up to intervene peacefully in situations of threat and danger.
6. We stand firm on the assertion that the health of women must be protected
We act to assure that all women receive a full range of care that assures, in accord with their needs and choices, their right to control their own reproductive choices. We assert our commitment to the provision of all women’s healthcare services needed to maintain their health and the health of their families.
7. We trust and act upon scientific knowledge that supports a holistic approach to health and nursing care
We examine and evaluate all sources of evidence to inform the choices we make in caring for those we serve. We can assure the public that we practice from a firm foundation of sound and reliable scientific knowledge. We will take all steps needed to inform the public of the science and research that supports our practices.
